Child Protection Advocacy
The Ministry for Children & Family Development has the difficult and important mandate of ensuring that children are safe from abuse and neglect.
If a child protection agency determines that a child is not safe, it has the legal ability to directly intervene through investigation, offering a range of support services to the parent, and, if necessary, can remove a child from the family home.
The responsibility and power that child protection agencies have is significant and can appear as a formidable force to a parent who feel that they have lost the ability to make decisions about their child.
If you have been contacted by the Ministry for Children & Family Development Social Worker, or if your child has been removed from your custody, or there is a possibility of removal, you are entitled to legal representation and to have an advocate with you when you attend meetings about your child with a social worker.
Our advocacy services include:
- providing information about child welfare law
- helping you communicate with the Ministry for Children & Family Development and other involved professionals
- accompaniment to meetings with the social worker
- accompany you to court
- help you communicate with your lawyer
- help you to develop your parenting and safety plans for your children
- resource and referral information
